Blackberry Bows Out of Smartphone Production Market

The end of an era has finally come as blackberry announced to stop the production of smartphones in the industry. BlackBerry was done with internal hardware design as soon as the DTEK50 was released. That device was based on a TCL reference design, and the leaked upcoming DTEK60 uses the same model as well. We saw this coming, and it is not a surprise anyway because blackberry which a decade ago was among the world’s largest smartphone makers, has seen its global market share slip to less than one percent as Apple and Android devices have dominated. CEO John Chen said in October 2015 that the company would exit the smartphone business, which has been on life support for years, if it cannot turn a profit in 2016. … and now, Blackberry announced within their Q2 Fiscal 2017results, “Our new Mobility Solutions strategy is showing signs of momentum, including our first major device software licensing agreement with a telecom joint venture in Indonesia. Under this strategy, we are focusing on software development, including security and applications. The company plans to end all internal hardware development and will outsource that function to partners. This allows us to reduce capital requirements and enhance return on invested capital”. Blackberry will now fully concentrate on software including security applications. The question is, who will blackberry outsource their hardware development to? One minute silence to all those who gave up their everything to get Blackberry Bold 5 back in the days.

Uber Reportedly Lost At Least $1.27bn In First Half Of 2016

Ride-hailing giant Uber lost at least $1.27 billion before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization in the first six months of 2016, Bloomberg reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter. The subsidies Uber grants its drivers was the main reason for the loss, finance head Gautam Gupta told investors in a quarterly conference call, Bloomberg said, citing sources. Uber, whose investors include Goldman Sachs and Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos, could not immediately be reached for comment.

The company lost about $520 million in the first quarter of the year and another $750 million in the second quarter, Bloomberg said. Uber, which is now valued at roughly $69 billion, lost at least $2 billion in 2015, the report said.
The company’s net revenue increased to about $1.1 billion in the second quarter from $960 million in the first quarter, while bookings rose to more than $5 billion from more than $3.8 billion in the prior quarter, Bloomberg said.

Beware of New WhatsApp Terms, Stop Them From Sharing Your Information With Facebook

This is not good at all, but I’d perceived this coming to fruition earlier since when Facebook acquired Whatsapp for a whopping $21.8 billion in 2014. Now, Whatsapp will now start sharing your information with Facebook including your Phone number.
If you don't want Facebook getting hold of your WhatsApp info, you can opt out in one of two ways. Here's how! When WhatsApp updates, you'll have to agree to its terms of service all over again, but before you tap agree, you can read more and opt out of sharing your information.
1. Launch WhatsApp from your home screen or the app drawer.

2. Tap the upward arrow in the bottom right corner to read more.

3. Tap the checkbox to opt out of sharing your information with Facebook.

But, if you have already agreed to the terms of service, you have 30 days to use the second method below to opt out or else, you are on your own.

1. Launch WhatsApp from your home screen or the app drawer.

2. Tap the more button in the top right corner. It looks like three vertical dots.

3. Tap Settings>>Tap Account.

4.Tap the checkbox next to Share my account info. …and you are good to go.

Your information’s are meant to be personal and not to be shared with third party. Share this post with your friends…

Nigeria's U23 Olympic Team Back In Nigeria

Twelve players who represented Nigeria in the 2016 Rio Olympics and 7 officials who accompanied them, including coach Samson Siasia, have arrived back in Nigeria while others returned to their various bases. The Dream Team won the only medal (Bronze) for Nigeria at the Olympics following their 3-2 victory over Honduras in the third-placed match.

Interestingly, they arrived the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Mondaynightwithout any official from the Sports Ministry or the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) welcoming them from Brazil and have now departed to their various destinations as no plans were made to host them.

Boko Haram Members Killed By Army As They Tried To Attack Soldiers From Sambisa

TROOPS REPEL ATTACK ON THEIR LOCATION AT DARUL JAMEL

Troops on Operation LAFIYA DOLE stationed at Darul Jamel, on the fringes of Sambisa forest, northern parts of Borno State, yesterday(22nd August) evening successfully repelled an attempted attack on their location by remnants of Boko Haram terrorists.

The terrorists attempted to storm the troops location at about 10.00pm, but paid dearly as the troops killed several of them including two senior commanders that led the attack.

The troops recovered 1 Light Machine Gun (LMG) with Registration number 56M-1101229, 1 AK-47 Rifle Magazine, Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) Bomb and 1 top cover of an AK-47 Rifle. Other items recovered include 395 Rounds of 7.62mm (NATO) ammunition and 15 rounds of 5.5mm by .45 ammunition.

Prior to the attack, the troops of the same unit on routine patrol earlier, had cleared an ambush staged by elements of the suspected remnants of the terrorists desperate for food near Banki Junction.

It is equally believed that the attack and ambush might not be unconnected to the fact that the terrorists were desperately targeting over 890 rescued herdsmen with their 5000 livestock being held captives by terrorists along Nigerian borders with Cameroon.

Thank you for your kind and usual cooperation.

Facebook Aims For Video-loving Teenagers With New App

image
Facebook on Friday took direct aim at video-loving adolescents, and Snapchat, with the release of a new iPhone app that allows teens to watch clips about the lives of their classmates.
The app, called Lifestage, was released with no fanfare, and is available for anyone to download on iPhone, although seeing profiles of other users is reserved for those 21 years of age or younger.
The social network allows users to make video clips to describe likes, peeves, dance styles, and other aspects of their character.
Those clips are woven together to serve as public profiles that can be viewed by other Lifestage members, provided they are young enough.
A tool in the app lets users block and report older folks.
“Lifestage makes it easy and fun to share a visual profile of who you are with your school network,” the app’s iTunes store description says.
Once enough students at any given school are on the app, it becomes “unlocked.”
“Once your school is unlocked, you can access the profiles of others in your school community (and all over!) so you can get to know people better in your school and nearby schools,” the description said.
Lifestage users are invited to share video snippets whenever they wish.
The app comes as a challenge to Snapchat, the vanishing message service that became a hit with teenagers and which lets members share pictures and video clips.
Lifestage was seen by some as an effort by Facebook to stay connected to young internet users disinclined to take part in the leading social network.
Facebook did not return an AFP request for comment.
Earlier this month, Instagram put its own spin on a key Snapchat feature by letting users post “Stories” that eventually vanish from the Facebook-owned photo-and video-sharing app.
Instagram Stories encourages people to share ephemeral collages of everyday moments on the app which has built a reputation for allowing people to post highlights from their lives or artistic works.

Samsung May Be Planning Refurbished Smartphone Program

image
Samsung Electronics Co Ltd plans to launch a program to sell refurbished used versions of its premium smartphones as early as next year, a person with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters.
The South Korean technology firm is looking for ways to sustain earnings momentum after reviving its mobile profits by restructuring its product line-up. As growth in the global smartphone market hits a plateau, Samsung wants to maximize its cost efficiency and keep operating margins above 10 percent.
The world’s top smartphone maker will refurbish high-end phones returned to the company by users who signed up for one-year upgrade programs in markets such as South Korea and the United States.
Samsung would then re-sell these phones at a lower price, the person said, declining to be identified as the plan was not yet public.
The person declined to say how big a discount the refurbished phones would be sold at, which markets the phones would be sold in or how many refurbished devices Samsung could sell.
A Samsung spokeswoman said the company does not comment on speculation.
It was not clear to what extent the phones would be altered, but refurbished phones typically are fitted with parts such as a new casing or battery.
Rival Apple Inc’s iPhone has a re-sale value of around 69 percent of its original price after about one year from launch, while Samsung’s flagship Galaxy sells for 51 percent of the original price in the U.S. market, according to BNP Paribas.
Refurbished phones could help vendors such as Samsung boost their presence in emerging markets such as India, where high-end devices costing $800 or so are beyond most buyers.
Apple sells refurbished iPhones in a number of markets including the United States, but does not disclose sales figures. It is trying to sell such iPhones in India, where the average smartphone sells for less than $90.
Selling used phones could help Samsung fend off lower-cost Chinese rivals that have been eating into its market share, and free up some capital to invest elsewhere or boost marketing expenditure.
Deloitte says the used smartphone market will be worth more than $17 billion this year, with 120 million devices sold or traded in to manufacturers or carriers – around 8 percent of total smartphone sales. Some market experts expect the used market to grow fast as there are fewer technology breakthroughs.
“Some consumers may prefer to buy refurbished, used premium models in lieu of new budget B.rands, possibly cannibalizing sales of new devices from those budget manufacturers,” Deloitte said in a report.
Samsung’s refurbishment program, details of which the person said could be finalized as early as 2017, could help the firm generate revenue from dated high-end smartphones returned by users upgrading to newer versions.
The company’s latest premium phones, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy Note 7, have received favorable reviews, suggesting cheaper, refurbished versions could be popular. At U.S. carrier Verizon Communications, the Galaxy S7 edge with 32-gigabyte storage retails for $792 without subsidies, while the Note 7 costs $864.
The program could help Samsung defend market share in emerging countries by bolstering mid-tier sales. Refurbished phones could also appeal to enterprise clients who want certain security or software products pre-installed on phones to give to their employees, the source said.
The risk of offering refurbished devices is that they could potentially cannibalize sales of Samsung’s other mid-tier devices.
Expectations for solid smartphone sales helped Samsung shares to a record 1.675 million won each on Friday, taking two-day gains to 7 percent and adding $15 billion in market value. The shares traded down 0.36 percent in Seoul on Monday.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg sold $95 million in Facebook stock to start making good on his philanthropy promise

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is selling a very small portion of his Facebook stock.

An SEC filing on Friday shows that Zuckerberg sold approximately 768,000 shares of Facebook stock in August worth more than $95 million. Zuckerberg used a 10b5-1 trading plan, which means the sale was scheduled ahead of time to avoid any issues with insider trading.

He isn’t just cashing out, though. The filing states that the sale was made as part of Zuckerberg’s recent promise to give away or spend 99 percent of his wealth on companies and initiatives that focus on "personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities."

Zuckerberg announced the plan along with his wife, Priscilla, after the couple had their first baby in December. The goal, Zuckerberg said at the time, is to "advance human potential and promote equality for all children in the next generation."

This is the first sale we’ve seen from Zuckerberg since that announcement was made last December. At the time he said he would limit his spending/donations to $1 billion per year for the next three years. That means this is probably the first of many such sales we’ll see from him in 2016. Facebook has even changed its company stock structure so Zuckerberg can give away his stake without giving away his control.

A company spokesperson declined to comment, and it’s unclear from the filing where this $95 million will be spent. Zuckerberg still owns well over 400 million shares of Facebook stock.

When creativity meets opportunity and invention is born. Meet the newly clone iPhone 7 that hasn’t been launch. But now, reverse is the case....
they already have a product that doesn't even exist it, iPhone 7.
Look at the image below as seen in china with a striking look similar to the leaked images of iPhone

Whatsapp Users Are Making 100 Million Calls Everyday

WhatsApp users are making 100 million calls everyday, the company has announced.
Most users are now getting familiar and feel safe using the whatsApp calling feature which was added months ago, Maybe due to the End-to end encryption feature which now make whatsapp users feel safe and secured.Just for those who are new to this, if any, the whatsapp calling feature allows you to make calls to another whatsapp users without paying a dime to your network provider instead it uses your data or wi-fi to make the call. And of course you must have a very good Internet network to do that. Most folks are now ditching their phone dedicated voicecalling feature by using apps like Whatsapp and Skype for numerous reasons. but some of the reasons revolved around end-to-end encryption, cheaper rate, superb call quality, easy group calling, etc.
In a blog post this week,Whatsapp announced that there are 100 million voice calls which take place on whatsapp everyday, which amount to 1,100 calls every second, that's huge right?Side note, most Africa countries are not really using the whatsapp calling features due to the poor internet network. In Nigeria for example, most telecommunication companies do have a snail like internet speed which are only good for opening webpages not to talk of using an app for calling over the network.
So only a tiny fraction of the 100 million whatsapp call made everyday belong to Africa.
Are you using the Whatsapp calling feature? What network?Tell us your experience.

Guess What Guys? You Can Now Post 140-seconds Long Video on Twitter & Vine!!!

There must be something so special about number 140 that twitter find it difficult to run away from. That is why they’ve been busy lately updating their services.
Here are the latest updates on Twitter:Twitter has announced that the video limit has been extended from 30 seconds to140 seconds. That’s 2 minutes and 20 seconds.
Twitter previously restricted videos to 30 seconds. The new 140-second video limit also applies to Vine, which previously had a six-second limit.
Twitterwill start allowing video publishers to make money out of their content on Vine, its video streaming service.Vine will use Twitter's Amplify Open program, which runs ads before a video starts playing.Twitter also launched"Twitter Engage", a mobile app that allows users with a large number of followers to track their posts and see what their fans are tweeting about. You’ll recall that Instagramallows users to post videos as long as 60 seconds, while Facebook Live limits videos to 45 minutes. Snapchat has a limit of up to 10 seconds.
I must say this a good move from twitter… If you are a video creator, it’s time to monetize your content.
